On 24.02.1960 a separate District
known as Pithoragarh with its headquarter at Pithoragarh came
into being with three more Tehsils at Dharchula, Didihat and
Munsiari after separation from Almora District of which it was a
separate Tehsil since year 1891. In the year 1978 Champawat
Tehsil of Almora was also included in Pithoragarh District and
there were six Tehsils known as sub division each under
administrative
control of S.D.M. Pithoragarh is situated in
North latitude 29o – 35

and East longitude 80o – 15

– 9 ׀׀
at an elevation of 5540 ft. (1615 meters) above the sea level,
25 kms West of Kali River, 121 kms of Almora and 152 kms North
of Tanakpur N.R. rail head. There is international boundary on
the North with Tibet and on the East with Nepal. During Chand
period a Pithoragarh fort was built by a Regional ruler peeru
alias Prithwi Gusain and since then Pithoragarh name of the
place got into prominence. Pithoragarh town after its
upgradation into a District Headquarter is spread over an area
better known as Shor Valley. The whole valley is prettily dotted
with big and small villages over an area of about five miles in
length and about three miles in breadth. Dipping gently into
South East and bisected into the
North and South by a
tabular ridge of Slate, Lime Stone, Green Stone and Magnetite.
Area of the division has an area of 8855.70 Kms. |
