Important
feature and worth seeing places in the division are as below
Gangotri.The18th
century’s temple dedicated to Goddess ganga is located near a sacred
stone in district Uttarkashi where king Bhagirath worshipped Lord
Shiva. Ganga is believed to have touched earth at this spot. It is
at an altitude of 3048 meters above sea level. It is approximately
300 kms from Dehradun, 250 kms from Rishikesh and 100 kms from
Uttarkashi. Gomukh is 18 kms away from here.
Gomukh. The
source of Ganga is at Gomukh where the mighty river emerges from the
depth of Gangotri glacier. The gangotri glacier is situated at the
height of 4255 metres above sea level. It is 18 kms away from
Gangotri and 02 kms away from Bhojbasa.
Yamunotri.Yamunotri
is the origin of sacred river Yamuna, famous for its thermal springs
and glaciers. Perched at an altitude of 3293 metres above from sea
level. It is located in the Uttarkashi district. It is very close to
Indo- China border and is surrounded by the Himaliyans shoots on all
sides. It is at a distance of 186 kms from New Tehri, 278 kms from
Dehradun and 236 kms from Rishikesh.
Among the major attractions of Yamunotri are hot water springs.
Nearby, Devotees prepare rice and potatoes to offer at the shrine by
dipping them in these hot water springs, tiding with muslin cloth.
Chandrabadani.The
Chandrabandni peak lying at an altitude of 2277m above sea level,
well known for the temple of Chandrabadani Devi which lies at the
top of mountain about 45 kms from Tehri. There are some old statues
and lots of iron Trishul outside the temple. It commands a beautiful
view of Surkanda, Kedrnath and Badrinath peaks.
Kunjapuri.Kunjapuri
is name given to a peak having an altitude about 1676 m above sea
level. It commands a beautiful view of snow ranges of Himalyas and
valley of Bhagirathi. It contains an old temple dedicated to the
Goddess Kunjapuri Devi. It is at a distance of 23 kms from Rishikesh
and 07 kms from Narendra Nagar.
Surkanda.The
Surkanda peak lying at an altitude of 2750 m in the western part of
Tehri and is famous for the temple of Surkanda Devi. It is about 8
kms from Dhanolti, 41 kms from Tehri and a steep ascent of about 1.5
kms on foot. A local fair is held on the occasion of Ganga Dushera
when thousands of devout pilgrims visit this place.
Tehri Dam.Tehri
Dam is the main dam of the Tehri Hydro Project , a major power
project located near Tehri. Towering 855 feet, the main dam at Tehri
is 5th tallest dam in the world. The main object is power
generation and supply of water.The dam project was approved in 1972
and construction was started in 1978. The Tehri Hydro Development
Corporation (THDC) was constituted in 1989 to supervise the
construction of the dam. The project is built near the old Tehri
town that lies at the confluence on the rivers Bhagirathi and
Bhilangna.
Dhanolti.Dhanolti
is ideal place for a quite holiday. It is situated at a height of
2400m and nestles between oak and deodar forest. It is 24 kms from
Mussorriee and 48 kms from Tehri. It commands a beautiful view of
valleys and Himalyas.
